Out of the Silent Planet:
  The first in C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy introduces us to Doctor Elwin Ransom. While hiking during leave of his teaching at Cambridge, Ransom reunites with an old friend (though used very loosely, for he barely remembers him) named Devine and his colleague Professor Weston. Through a series of underhanded events, Ransom is deceived and kidnapped, and all three are whisked into space. After finally arriving at a planet known as "Malacandra", Ransom escapes from his captors, encounters native inhabitants, and learns the history of the planet (as well as a deal about the rest in our galaxy), while still being pursued by his fellow humans.

  *Some spoilers: Through his adventure, Ransom discovers that "Malacandra" is what humans call Mars. All planets are named likewise (ex. "Perelandra", the name for Venus, which is the focus of the second book), and all can communicate with each other. Earth, known as "Thulcandra", is called the Silent Planet because the whole planet was restrained after its Oyarsa (the ruling guardian force) became evil.   Radiance is the TFL approved fanlisting for Out of the Silent Planet. It has been online since January 12, 2008 (2008/01/12). The name comes from Ransom's shock while onboard Devine and Weston's spacecraft at how space is an "ocean of radiance", and not "dead" or "barren".
