Shasta is first introduced in the book A Horse and His Boy. He is the adopted son of a fisherman, Arkeesh, but something within him yearns to travel north, over the mountains. When Shasta meets up with a talking horse named Bree who is currently a slave himself, the two escape to the north, towards Narnia. On the way, they meet up with a runaway Tarkeena, Aravis, and her talking horse Hwin, and the four become a group, eventually reaching Archeland and Narnia, just in time to prevent some disastrous events. Once there, Shasta realizes that he is one of the two twin sons of the King of Archeland, Prince Cor (his brother is Corin). He invites Aravis to come live with them at the palace, and, despite all their arguments during their travels, they eventually get married. Aravis and Cor make another appearance in The Last Battle.
Shasta has a kind of irresistable personality that makes you like him right off the bat. His spirit seems never to waver, though he undergoes hardships and frights, and he always stays strong in what he believes in, always there for his friends and those he loves.
